I have only just found out that the caterpillars I had in the garden were in fact from the ermine moth- and have had several suggestions from members of the gardening club I belong to.

Hi, this was the advice I received."The moth that attacks spindle and apple trees is an
ermine moth. Mechanical treatment is the removal of the tips of the
branches with the caterpillars and burn or bin them. Or let nature take
its course, the trees do recover quite quickly and grow new leaves. Or
use a B.T.k. spray - bacillus thuringeiensis kurstaki - this is a
bacterial spray that is not toxic to humans. "
