Sometimes called basket fuchsias, varieties with naturally lax stems are ideal trailing plants for containers. However, in many cases these plants may need to be supported with thin canes or twigs for growing as a bush in the open ground. The final shape of the plant often depends on pinching out the tips of shoots quite early to encourage bushy growth. 'Swingtime' is one of the best red and white trailing kinds, almost hardy and very free-branching with prolific flowers. It may be trained as a standard or even espalier for pot culture indoors or outside on the patio. The Royal Horticultural Society has given it its prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
