Genus: Silybum.
Species: Silybum marianum.
Spring 2009 I rediscovered a packet of seeds of this plant I collected back in 1999 (I had noted the date on the packet). I thought the seeds would be no longer viable, but I sowed them and much to my surprise they germinated quickly! This is an invasive weed in some countries. It forms an attractive and architectural clump - the spiney thistle leaves have white markings.
