Crested Fern
Genus: Dryopteris.
Species: Dryopteris affinis 'Cristata'.
As much as I love ferns, I do have extreme difficulty remembering their names. This one is obviously a 'cristata' of some kind. It turned up unannounced in the border opposite the fernery about two years ago, and soon became my favourite. It's no more than 10 ins high, and very tactile. I just have to touch it whenever I go past.
Since I wrote this I have, as you can see, discovered its correct name.
