Calathea veitchiana "Medallion," or Medallion Calathea, is a tropical foliage plant native to South America. Its large, deep green leaves are emblazoned with patterns of cream and light green, while the undersides of the leaves stand out in a beautiful deep maroon red.
This plant requires a warm, moist environment. Keep the soil moist but never soggy, and avoid letting the plant sit in water; instead, discard any drainage water after watering. The Calathea will succumb to root rot if the soil is kept too wet. Direct sunlight will singe a Calathea's leaves, but it will fare quite well in plenty of indirect sunlight or even a shady spot. Keep the humidity level constant and be advised that Calathea does not respond well to dry air.
