Santolina or lavender cotton is a Mediterranean group of small or medium-sized shrubs that make neat, rounded bushes, with finely divided foliage. They enjoy warm sunny positions, and good drainage is essential. In colder areas, it will need protection in winter. It is worth taking a few cuttings in late summer to overwinter indoors as an insurance policy. S. chamaecyparissus is a choice dwarf species with soft, woolly foliage, silver, white, or grey in the variety 'Lemon Queen', which is denser than the species and a more attractive plant for rock gardens and small beds.

Reminders for this plant

Due over 16 years ago:

Prune

Cut back hard every 2 or 3 years

Take cuttings

Cuttings of half-ripe side shoots, 5 - 8 cm long with a heel, July/August in a frame. Roots within 2 weeks. High percentage. The heeled cuttings can also be placed direct into the open garden in early July and should be well-rooted by the winter.

Due over 15 years ago:

Divide

Divide in spring or autumn. Larger divisions can be planted out direct into their permanent positions. We have found it best to pot up the smaller divisions and grow them on in a lightly shaded position in a cold frame, planting them out once they are well established in the summer.
