When other fuchsias fail to survive the winter, this robust species from South America can be relied upon to retain a framework of branches. The purple and red flowers are small but borne profusely throughout summer. This plant succeeds in any well-drained soil and prefers partial to full shade. A very ornamental plant, it is a parent of many of the hardy ornamental fuchsia varieties.
