All the wild species, natural hybrids and miniature narcissi that tend to be less than about 30cm (12in) high have a special charm and are popular for planting in containers, troughs and window-boxes. 'Hawera' is typical of these. It is a form of N. triandrus, dwarf enough to be grown in rock gardens or at the edge of paths, and in containers where it will be perfectly in scale with its surroundings. But its other parent is a jonquil, which provides its elegance and scent. Altogether a charming early variety for more intimate places in the garden. The Royal Horticultural Society have given it their prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
