Chives are one of the key plants in a herb garden, and have been used for their culinary and medicinal properties for thousands of years, being grown in China 3,000BC. 'Forescate' scores over its species parent being taller and more vigorous, with purple-pink flowers against the pale purple or sometimes white petals. The best way to harvest and maintain a fresh supply of leaves is to cut them to about 3cm above the ground four times a year. Plants enjoy rich soil (unlike the Mediterranean herbs which like poor ground) in full sun. They can also be grown to the front of a flower border, forming an attractive miniature edge with their fresh green leaves. Use in salads and soups, etc.
