Delbert's Garden

Kniphofia Red Hot Poker

This popular garden plant was originally introduced from South Africa but is now occasionally seen naturalised in mild areas. It is a member of the large and very varied lily family.

The strap-shaped, grass-like, channelled foliage surrounds the base of the stems. The dense terminal spikes of tubular flowers are very spectacular and attractive to insects. The colours range from white hybrids to the traditional yellow spikes with red tips.

Some species of bees may be able to reach the nectar and the pollen may be eaten by house sparrows.
