The unusual peony ... the end (?)

So I came back from work at about 6:30pm and went to check on our unusual peony … sadly things weren’t looking up … and I mean that literally. 1st photo shows the drooping bud almost as though the stalk was broken. On close inspection … something had eaten half of the stalk. I’ve seen this on other plants in the garden and and I never managed to figure out what it is, sometimes buds of the Spirea drop like that or even a rose bud once. Its probably the usual culprits … SLUGS.

Anyway be it as when it happened on other plants, the bud eventually died .. I decided to cut the flower and put it in a vase in the hope that it opens and I can finally see what the flower looks like.

So much for me getting seeds from this flower :(

Some more sad news … the leaves are getting all brown spots and going brown at the edges. So I think those of you that suggested it may be a weaker plant or that it may have a lack of nurtrients, may very well be right …

Not all is doom and gloom though … the rest of my peonies are blooming marvellously …

Ah well, lets hope the damage to the stalk of the “unusual cut peony” won’t stop it from drawing water and opening up …….

To be continued ….

Indeed ... couldn't quite believe that that particular bud was the ONLY one that was damaged!!!

Oh dear, it knew we were all waiting on tenter hooks for the result, at least the others are ok...

Fingers crossed that it will survive and get other flowers.

Very strange!

Does not look like slug damage...looks like that 'branch' did not get enough light and air and started to fail, that caused the stalk to start collapsing. It happens to herbacious plants but nothing to worry about.

Your Peony looks good on the raised bed.
