How about looking for something evergreen? I don't have any suggestions for you because my garden is mostly shaded, but I rely on evergreen ferns for a little interest during long winters. You'll find something, just keep looking. Hopefully someone with more experience than I have will give you some input - I'm really more of a native plant enthusiast than a gardener, but I try.

if you want some evergreen shrubs you could try choisya, euonymus, escalonia, pittosporum, cenothus, Fatsia japonica, just need to be careful with shrubs as they can grow quite big, it depends on how large you want them, just a few to choose from, hope im not waffling on too much :^)

not waffling at all daylily...i dont want them to be too bulky as i dont want them to grow out and make my lawn even smaller... but would like hight as my garden is on a slant so everyone walking past can see straight into my front window :) x

the only things i can think of at the moment are deciduous shrubs which grow quite fast and can be cut back to any size you want early each year, like cornus, sambucus, cotinus obviously they are bare in winter but with the cornus you get the nice red stems and other colours and you can keep them to the size you want :^) x
