Indeed it was frustrating. We didn't have slugs until we mulched. We removed the mulch at the end of that season and haven't had a slug problem since.

Poor you, Rosalieg - it's so soul destroying to see a lovely plant coming up nicely one minute and then the slugs/snails ruin it the next.
