This is unusual Andrew, looks a bit like liatris (not the leaves tho..) and the leaves are very dark.

These used to be called cimicifuga and like deep shade and moist soil. This variety is a particularly good form

Ahh, bugbane (wonder whether it is the bane of bugs!!). Quite tall so probly not for me. My glads have to be supported as my garden can get quite windblown..so I guess this would too. But its very attractive and I can imagine it in your garden..is it somewhere up by your fruit cage?

You did not mention the scent I always pull a stem towards me to take it in, an added bonus they have it all. I have self saved seed raised ones flowering this year very little difference in them.
