I think someone on the Scottish Rock Garden Club website may have said something similar.Getting seed from the exchanges,names are often wrong,especially with Aquilegias.

This picture shows Aquilegia ottonis amaliae, an excellent plant for a rockery or trough. It is commonly donated wrongly to society seed lists as Aquilegia nivalis.

This is certainly not Aquilegia nivalis, which has relatively much shorter, blackish violet petals and very short spurs. The plant in the photo looks more like A. discolor.
