Now that all its leaves have fallen, I can see the red stems.

In the late winter - before the leaves open. It's due for the chop in February as I do it every other year.

Hi, I made the mistake in the past of cutting mine back every year and they never made a "statement", I'm leaving mine this time, do you think it would do any harm to leave them a couple of years because as I have a 50 metre line of them, behind the pond, I do want them to get big but not lose the red stems.

Well, they can get rather large, Dawn! This one hadn't been cut back for years when we arrived; it had spread right over the stream wall into the water and our tree surgeon pruned it for us then - he recommended doing it every other year to get the best stem colour.

Thanks for the advice, I'm going to leave mine this year.

Thanks Spritzhenry. I'll leave it next spring and cut it the following year.

I love all the different colour dogwoods , they are so easy to grow from cuttings ............

Thanks for that SpritzHenry. I wont cut mine back this time then and see how they are. From your experience, it proves that even if they are left unpruned for a few years, not all is lost.

When do you cut yours back Spritzhenry ?
I'm never sure when to do mine.
I usually wait until the leaves start to open.
