I did wonder!
It is one of the most glorious garden plants and not as tender as its reputation suggests. Mostly it is just grown wrong which results in death.

Yes, I have killed it once. Then I saw it growing in Chile, just yards from the sea in almost pure sand.

Yes DD, I never cut them back as the stems are hollow.
