If you've been watching the Chelsea Flower Show coverage, the evening programs end with a couple of questions for Monty and Joe Swift from viewers. Someone asked the other day about roses for shade and Monty said this was his favourite. Deep coloured blooms and fragrant, but weak stems (I've tied it to wires, trained against a west facing fence) and prone to blackspot

My friend has nine pine trees in her back garden, so getting pine needles won't be a problem

What a wonderful colour. What a good idea.
Cutting off all black spot leaves place Pine needles straw or grass layed around the rose on the soil will prevent this as I learned from you an American male gardener on tube black spot comes from the soil beneath and around the rose stem and spray leaves with one part milk to ten parts water.
