Echium pininana

I have tried repeatedly to grow these without success, in Gloucestershire and high over the Bristol Channel. One got to flowering but the inflorescence never developed properly due, I think, to a really bad summer. One or two I have lost in severe winter weather. But this last year a whole succession flourished for a while between 2 and 4 feet and then suddenly wilted and failed. When removed they showed little root. Has anyone else similar experience? I do find chafer grubs in this garden…

I have tried these in the past and then the year they are to flower, they didnt survive the cold. Even though they were well wrapped. I shall try again when I get a large garden and a poly tunnel.
