Vine Weevils

We were infected with these little DARLINGS, probably through an auricula plant. Not knowing any better at the time we emptied the compost out in the raised veg garden. Now they are a major problem, a friend has recommended giving the area an armillatox wash; but may I recommend that other people note our ill judged action.

If you look at Seaburngirls blog of yesterday "now what shall we do with these" it will strike a chord with you :0 (

I really must check my pots, I keep reading all the warning blogs and still keep putting this job off and doing other things and I will be spitting feathers if I lost my Heucheras.....

I found some in fuchsia pots yesterday, still small thank goodness. Some went on the bird table and some got drowned when the roots were washed. You can get nematodes for use in beds but check what the ambient temperature needs to be before you send for any.

I'e used these Nematodes in the past very successfully SG. They can be a bit expensive but worth it to protect your precious plants.

I've always chucked infected compost on the beds after picking out the critters that I can see. the birds rapidly work over the area and I don't think I have ever [fingers crossed] found them in plants in the ground. yes in pots but not bare soil.
armillotox is for fungus isn't it? so no point in putting it on the soil for vine weevil.

Just a point SBG as Vine Weevils are known to attack such potted plants as Fuchsias, can you be sure eggs haven't hatched out while in the garden and the grubs migrated to pots put outside in the summer? I'm almost certain that's how I got my first infestation which wiped out over a 100 fuchsias, as I didn't know about these little blighters then...I most certainly do now.

they are not that mobile waddy. the female lays the eggs. the maggots rarely move from the site where they are laid.

Thanks for the info SBG, but I don't think I'll risk it in the future...if you don't mind.
