I have absolutely no recollection as to where this idea came from or to whom I should thank. But thank you.
Firstly, it’s so pleasant gathering the materials for the project and so long as you wait for the happy effects to wear off before waving a power drill around, it’s perfectly safe!
Secondly, having drilled out the base of the corks and installed them atop of your bamboo canes, should you still manage to poke yourself in the eye with sufficient force to make a trip to Accident & Emergency necessary, it’s nice to imagine the looks of both admiration and envy on the faces of the other waiting room unfortunates as well as that of the questioning receptionist when you announce with honesty and panache…..
“Oh this? It was a silly ol’ Champagne Cork darling! Whatever else……..?”

well you didn't tell any fibs. but what about your poor eye? Hope you are ok. I wear glasses and have had several jabs in the lens. Dread to think what would have happened if I'd worn contacts or had 20:20 vision.

Good idea! I usually place any Champagne corks on top of the soil in my pots, nice to remember birthdays etc when I'm weeding around them :o)
