So it begins!

I have never been so sore!
Started to dig out today, ended up pounding the earth with a hammer a chisel.
(And before you say it, no I don’t own a pick axe, why would I.) Got to get one if I’m to continue.
Off to bed with my aches and pains, some strawberries and honeyed cream.
A bit disappointing only got half a bet dug out but patience is a virtue.
I will prevail.
Martin.

Oh dear Martin, never mind, you have my every sympathy, just remember the best way to ease aches and pains from gardening is to go out again as soon as possible and work them out of your system. We`ve all been there at some point,
I like my strawberries with sugar and squirty cream but not in bed lol.....

Why can't you use a fork, or a rotavator ?
Using a long pronged tool would break up hard ground far better and it would make for a lot less pain too.

Oh I've had those pains too. Soak in salt & baking soda will help. Or Epson's salts or Radox. Ice packs on aches and hot water bottle is good too.
If the ground is very hard and dry trying giving it a good soaking the day b4 digging. Or even every day for a few days in a row. I find it helps.
Hope your feeling better soon.

Agree with Angie - I'd be giving that a thoroughly good soaking with a hose and sprinkler for some hours on each part and hoping for rain as well to penetrate deeper down rather than pickaxing the soil - once its wet enough, it'll be much easier to dig.

Hi all thanks for the tips, wasn't as sore today as I thought. Had planned to get out and do a little more but the wind is very heigh so staying indoors with the gardening books tonight.
I have wartered as you suggest, thank you, and we will see in a day or two if it makes a difference.
Thank you all.
Martin.

Yep - you've uploaded 2 new ones, is that you in the white teeshirt with your back to the camera? (white teeshirt?!! for gardening, surely not...)

No not me, younger nephew. I was taking the photo and trying not to cover the camera with dirt.
The earth was so dry the clay was hard so only dust and powder no good honest muck.
Guess what? Just bought a pick axe! lol.
