Reminders

Due almost 13 years ago:

Summer prune Wisteria sinensis.

Summer pruning (July or August)
Cut back the whippy green shoots of the current year’s growth to five or six leaves after flowering in July or August.

This controls the size of the wisteria, preventing it getting into guttering and windows, and encourages it to form flower buds rather than green growth.

Due over 12 years ago:

Save seed and sow in late august. Digitalis purpurea 'Pams Choice'.

Collect the dried seedheads and sow in some sandy-ish potting compost in late August or early September. Plants sown at this time should flower the next year.

Prune and train. Rose, Madame Alfred Carriere.

This is a noisette type, old fashioned, climbing rose. It has beautiful, pale pink to white, double flowers that are gloriously scented. The stems are slender and smooth, and the foliage is a pale green. For the first two years after planting, only cut out dead, diseased and damaged wood and train stems to horizontal wire supports. After that, prune the main shoots to fit the area, and reduce sideshoots to three or four buds.

Winter prune Wisteria sinensis.

Winter pruning (January or February)
Cut back growth to two or three buds in January or February (when the plant is dormant and leafless) to tidy it up before the growing season starts and ensure the flowers will not be obscured by leaves.
