Jacque, it was the biggest bee I've ever seen. We were clearing some earth at the end of our garden and disturbed him. He was none to happy and had Jill and I diving for cover! A and J

It must be a female Digger bee (Digger bees have white bums) - they build their nests underground (sometimes as far down as 1.5m if they find an old mouse or animal hole). Great photo!
