I see the water NOW! Is the mexican spinach edible?

2 Sep, 2009

Thanks Milky....the Fatsia is a cutting from last year and the leaves are bigger and better than the mother,I'm really pleased with it.
Marie, the spinach is well edible, it grows fast - like a weed and tastes a bit milder than ordinary spinach which is nice.
The baby leaves are lovely raw in salad and look so pretty in a salad as they have an amazing magenta coloured centre to the leaf, (you can see them better in other shots in my gallery). When you cook them they turn green.
These guys are over nine feet tall now and we've been munching away at them since early June, I'll definately be growing this again next year!

LOL!! Cheek! I'm supposed to be the mad one!!
Does the spinach grow from seed or would I need a plant? & is it annual or perennial? Loadsa q's!

Ask away, I don't mind at all. It grows easily from seed, sow inside early if you want, or outside May. Thin seedlings to 8" apart, sun/partial shade. It's an annual and proper name is Chenopodium Giganteum. HOPE THAT MAKES SENSE!

Yep! I understood it!!

It's not coming up on a search!!
Where can I get seeds?

Love your Fatsia Jen :) Can you tell me how /when to take cuttings....?

3 Sep, 2009

Marie, I got mine from Jekka's Herb Farm. Her open days were last week and I picked up a packet while I was there doing a workshop with her. Mines coming into flower so I'm hoping to collect the seed but bought a pack just to make sure! If the seed sets I'll let you have some.

Crazydi, I'm no expert....
Last August I took the cutting just above a node and stuck it in a pot, hey presto, in just a couple of weeks it took!
They also send out side shoots with roots already on, that you can seperate off if you're careful. 8-))

No probs...I don't think the flowers are going to be that exciting but that's not important...it's the seed I'm looking for, fingers crossed 8-)))

It's no hardship, I seem to take it all in more when I have to concentrate on it
