It is mildly toxic, causing a mild dermatitis on the skin.
It has been used since Colonial times here, on occasion as a medicine. But more often for the fact it will cover unsightly areas of the yard and it attracts hummingbirds!
It is very easy to grow...just take a vine cutting, put it in the ground, and voila! new vines! Due to that it has to be kept in check so that it does not become invasive.

I wonder id you can get it here! I love the colour, & it would be great for screening off my bin area from the shared path!

Well...let's say I just collect the seeds next month if I can get out there to the park to get them and we shall find out if it is legal.
I need to collect the seed for myslef as well...I have an arbor planned to be done next spring, and want these growing over it.
I once heard an old story of how it got it's common name.....Down south, in Alabama, and older lady friend told me that the ladys of the deep south used to use the flower, fresh pulled, as a lipstick! Now I have tried doing this but with no staining effect (I tried it on my finger...lol)

I thought it would've been because the unopened buds look like lipsticks!!
LOL!
I hope it IS legal!
The arbour sounds great!
Planning something along those lines myself!
