Back garden - trying to grow grass!

This is a photo of our back garden. My husband is trying to grow grass in the big middle patch but the seeds don't seem to be doing much - they've been there 2 weeks now and not a shoot in sight! We are thinking of putting down ready grown roll out grass now! (He wants it to be his own personal cricket wicket) ;-)
