Clematis recta 'Purpurea' - new shoots

This is a herbaceous clematis (that is, it doesn't climb) with stems reaching six feet in a season but needing some kind of support. Apart from paeonies, I think these are the most dramatic new shoots in the spring. The leaves fade to a muddy green by the end of summer
