Prunus serrula var. tibetica from W. China, says the tag. Lovely mahogany bark.
It looks like this also goes by:
Paperbark cherry, Tibetan cherry, Birch cherry.
This taken in grounds of Fota House on Fota Island near Cobh Southern Ireland

Helpfully reminded by article in Scotsman on 3rd March 07 about Cork, that the garden was in grounds of Fota House on Island of Fota near Cobh.
Garden expert Matt James named this ornamental tree as one of his favourites in the "Times" garden section this week, stating " it has a beautiful bark you want to polish" Good choice!
