Virginia Spiderwort Flower

Virginia Spiderwort Flower (Commelinaceae)

Spiderworts are so named because the angular leaf arrangement suggests a squatting spider.

Virginiana root tea was used as a laxative, for female kidney disorders and stomach problems Crushed and smashed aerial parts of plant used as a poultice over insect bites, stings, and to bind wounds. Native American and Pioneers used the crushed plant as a poultice to treat cancer

The stems, leaves, and flowers of spiderworts are edible. The herbage may be eaten raw or added to stews. The flowers (which may be either pink, blue or rose-purple) make an attractive edible garnish for salads.

Thanks for all the info, didn't know they were edible. I love to collect these plants, there are quite a few different varieties on the market now, and they bloom all summer long, great plant to have in the garden.

There is a house down the street from me that is abandoned, and these grow there....they have naturalized and become part of the landscape. We are trying to find the owner to ask permission to 'harvest' a few of these for our place!

Will have to look at the nursery next spring I guess...lol... ;o)
