Three different Clematis montana on the house wall.

Three different Clematis montana on the house wall.

I discovered today that there are actually three different C.montanas on the house wall, a white, a pale pink and a darker pink! The rose is 'New Dawn' and has buds already!

love the Montanas....perhaps that's what I need. mine was eaten down to soil level by some very fat, sleek voles that I have been seeing recently...

New Dawn is a pale pink. When we came, it looked very poorly, the base was shaded by an enormous Hebe, which was growing across the sitting room window. We took the Hebe out and made a small rose bed (three roses) and I manured around the roses. WOW you should have seen the difference! I could not believe my eyes! New Dawn shot out in all directions and is now so healthy it has grown up to the guttering - I can't get up there to prune it properly! I do use a long-handled thingy but still can't prune correctly. I am sorry about your Clematis Lori. How do you protect against voles?

not sure, Spritzhenry. I have to move the plant anyway...I've removed the arbour...but can't find the roots! This was an ideal winter for the voles...lots of snow... when the snow started to recede I found cache after cache of birdseed and sunflower seeds in the snow...they ate the perennials,(esp. the Blue Flag Iris) and the bunnies ate the bark off of my crabapple and roses... The plants that the rodents didn't touch are doing wonderfully. snow is a perfect insulator.
