ive a small tree like that down the end of the garden, im just going to cut the dead wood away and leave it

think I will do the same - might even plant clemitas around it - although I'm worried it has a disease - that said, that is where the Aquilegia was found so may be OK

Ah yes, definitely a clematis planting opportunity!!
