I have two of these shrubs or small trees growing by the house, but I have no idea what they are.

This must be Flowering Dogwood (Cornus florida / Benthamidia florida). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cornus_florida

I thought it might be a dogwood, but the shape of the petal is wrong - these are pointed rather than rounded at the ends. Maybe it's another Cornus species? I recognize the typical dogwoods that grow around here but this isn't one of them. It isn't fragrant at all.

For me it seems to belong to the dogwood family. Maybe Japanese Flowering Dogwood (Cornus kousa / Benthamidia japonica)? It has pointed petals. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kousa_Dogwood In this Wikipedia site, the petals are pointed although the shapes of them are a bit rounder than yours. But in Japanese wikipedia, the petals look like yours. I'm not sure you can open this Japanese site, but here it is: http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%83%A4%E3%83%9E%E3%83%9C%E3%82%A6%E3%82%B7

Beautiful. I love the white dogwood. We have just the groundcover species here.

The foliage looks like the Peony plant. I have never seen a Peony blossom
with five petals but on this page there are a couple that are similar.
Is it fragrant?
