Thx ladies. Got 2 more buds on this plant that don't look like opening just yet.

My first (clematis) love!! Mine has no flowers so far this year.....roots are too dry I fear!

If there was 1 clematis I wanted to flower this year was this one as it flowers twice a year. My others are struggling with dry roots like you and wish i'd got ones with more buds on. I went for healthy roots instead. I'm still wet behind the gills when it comes to gardening so didn't know. lol

Steve, I think you probably made the right choice going for good roots! Next year, with a good drink and a feed, those Clems will be beautiful!! what vars did you buy? Some don't flower until late summer.....

Montana rubens (which should of flowered early spring), Hagley Hybrid, Warszawska Nike, Ville De Lyon & Gladys Picard. These ahould be flowering in summer but only a few buds showing on a couple. Watch this space i guess! lol

Yes, my Hagley has nothing yet, nor warsaw Nike. I don't have the other two, but I bet they will come in their own good time!

Steve, with your Montana, don't prune it unless it totally outgrows its space and even then, make sure you prune immediately after flowering as Montanas flower on old wood so they need the whole summer to grow and ripen if you want spring flowers. Sometimes, even if you follow those rules, you will lose flowers for the first year after pruning.....the moral of this tale is...plant a Montana where there is lots and lots of room for it to grow!! Your's will flower next year, when it is a bit more mature.....:))

Erm...praps the house wall?.........or the shed?.....I don't grow any Montanas here Steve, but I had Montana Freda and Montana Tetra Rose in my old garden. The Tetra Rose was about 5m wide and 2m high when I left...I kept training it out and cutting it off at the top! Freda wasn't quite as big, but covered about 4m of fence with her lovely cherry red flowers.

Would it survive me moving it now as its well attached to trellis?

I would carefully tease it away and get it moved before it gets any bigger if I were you! Even if you have to lose a few leaves......the sooner the better.

Picture this, how about getting another trellis and having a double trellis like the others on the 1st fence and having the rubens growing with the climbing rose(winter white) on that panel. Think that might look nice when established.

you'll see what I mean! A large flowered clematis with a rose on the other hand. ...or an integrifolia or even a viticella....wonderful! See what you think....

OMG, i can't believe how much it has spread. Seeing that oic i'm not so sure if it'll work with the climbing rose. Just overpower it I think. I'm very tempted to get rid of the ivy on the back fence as it belongs to upstairs garden but has grown over into ours the last few years. Does rubens leaves stay green all year?

Afraid not Steve....you have to look at the thatch in the winter. :( Do you have a friend you could give it to and just buy a smaller growing clem to replace it?

Ah thats a shame as i'd would of bought another and had 2 down the bottom to replace ivy. I might just go for my 1st suggestion and grow it behind the climbing rose. Looking at the pic it goes up quite a way before spreading so the climbing rose would still be well in view and the rubens growing along the top. What you think?

sounds good! As long as there is somewhere for the montana to go when it gets bigger, as you can't really prune them successfully without losing at least one year of flowers. Go for it!

I've moved it to the side fence where it has now got the whole fence to go along. Put a pic on already
