I think my beans (on the left) are far too unruly for the supermarkets (right) but I know which I'd prefer on my plate. How do they grow them so straight!?

Hi Peter, yes I would pick home grown any day the seed company's develop seeds to suit the supermarkets needs, uniform, designed to mature all together for harvesting, and with long keeping qualities. The nutrients start to deteriorate within hours of picking. Flavour and nutrients, don't concern them as long as they look good people buy them! For veg with real flavour and extended cropping look for the old heritage varieties. They have several advantages, more seeds in each packet, and once you have grown them you can save seeds for next year and the seeds adapt to local conditions and your soil with each year you grow them.
