Do you water it in the trunk ? If not give it a big drink of water with feed, in the top through the trunk and see what happens.Water it through the top every other day(without feed) and give a week or 2 and hopefully may come back to life ..
Put your fingers in have a feel round too see if any fronds are lurking beneath the surface

thanks mush, yes i have watered at the top but the very centre has become hard ( i read 'caramelised' on this site somewhere) and think that indicates its beyond repair. I am still persisting though, we have our 'little chats' still. I can't give up
