Our view across the valley is changing

The hill across the valley is being cut of spruce trees for the lumber mill. Looks like the deciduous trees are being carefully left in place - no clear cutting here - our neighbour is a careful and considerate woodsman. But our view will definitely be different in this direction.

Oh don't I just love that. I'm swooning. My my , you are soooooo lucky to have that view. It will look different, but actually the colours are beautiful where it's been cut and perhaps a bit more variety than a dense evergreen forest! I think it's perfect!

And it will soon grow back, mostly with birches, Karensusan63. Just as long as the earth doesn't get washed away in the meantime - the hill is steep. You can see all the spruce branches lying neatly on the ground. The logs have been taken out.

Birches...my favourite trees. In Scotland the highlands are peppered with 'downy birch' It is a small but really beautiful tree and in the winter the bare stems look really red....beautiful effect en masse! It's all over Glencoe, which is my favourite part of Scotland.

Very interesting, Karensusan63. Never heard of that, and I have yet to visit Scotland. One of these days... I'll look that tree up. We have the white/paper birch here, they are among the first to grow in after clearing or a fire. The latter is an ever present danger here, especially with the hot dry weather we've been having.

Ah yes, the downy birch is smaller and has a pinkish bark. Here we seem to be having a pretty typical British Summer so far.......no two days the same!

You are fortunate that your neighbour isn't a clear cutter, Elke. If the birches are growing tall the hardwoods must be in the understory...So many people are in the lumber business...it's all dollars and cents..Will they be replanting the softwoods, do you think? the evolution of a forest can span a few generations..too bad more people aren't into the long term.

What a great view. Makes me wish I lived somewhere where I had a proper view and garden.
