I think the birds brought this along some years ago

Thank you, I can now change the title :-) They do grow very large & straggly I find. Also, there seems to be a fungi when parts die off. At least, I think it is a fungi, white powder on the lower part of the old stems. It takes nothing to cut off though.

I like the straggly look as mine is in the rose bed. I havent had it long enough to see any fungus but will keep an eye on it.

Centaurea montana cornflower mine is white they are lovely.
