still a lot of rivalry ariene a good strain of leek can be worth hundreds of pounds durham tyneside, wearside and northumberland were the hot beds of top leek growers and still are ,seaburn show will have leeks twice the size of these in the photo, and must not exceed more than six inches in length of the white leek,

~I didn't know that still went on!
The prizes used to be really good as I remember~ not cash but things like quilted bedspreads,best quality cotton sheets,canteens of cutlery and furniture~probably got at a discount from the local Coop~my grandad used to always win a few prizes and my gran then had these enormous veg to use up!

Takes me back!I remember going with my grandad to the local leek shows when I was a child near Blyth~ they used to be enormous and there was a fair amount of rivalry!
