Hi Tommymoo, how many Bananas do you have, in your collection.Question when is the best time to remove the young Banana shoots, and which is the best method. I lost Three Abyssinian Bananas last winter the heating pack up in the greenhouse when i was in hospital. I have three more coming some time in September. The Musa Basjoo, are very hardy and have shoots coming up from the base of the plant, these are the ones i want to remove.
Any advices will be gratefully appreciated.
Good Luck And Happy Gardening.

Hi Catweisel :-)
I have 3 Musa Basjoo (excluding their babies), 4 Abyssinian, 3 unknown ones probably Abyssinian, which makes 10.
Sorry to hear that you were in hospital and lost 3 Abyssinian Bananas last winter...
About the shoots of Musa Basjoos, better not remove them, since it appears that this affects the growth of the main plant. If you wish to remove them, and don't mind the restricted growth of main plant, probably best to do it in spring. The Musa Basjoo naturally grows in clumps and it's best not to disturb this...
I thought about exactly the same thing (to remove the babies) but I when I asked Will Giles (The Exotic Garden in Norwich) about the idea, this was the answer. He adheres to this and has wonderful displays upwards to 4 metres high.
Please take care, and good luck with your new Abyssinian Bananas!!
