wooden box used as a stove

I recently acquired two wooden 'boxes' from an old monastic order (The 'Arme Klaren' in Dutch, from the Franciscanessen
Clarissen : Ordo Sanctae Clarae, Ordo Sancti Francisci Pauperes Clarissa (OSCI)
Coletienen : Ordo Sanctae Clarae reformationis ab Coleta (Coletanae) (OSClCol) (Arme Klaren)).
One has an opening which can be closed. The entire inside is clad with zinc. There are holes in the corners. It seems these boxes were used to put hot stones (bricks) into them, so they worked like a stove, then you could put your cold feet on top of it, or, if this was too hot, you could put them at both sides.
I took off the 'door', the shutter at the front. One can shut off the side parts (to the right and the left) with a zinc panel.
