My peony is coverd in ants dont know what they are up to just hope they dont do any damage

The ants are part of the blooming process Janette. You will always find the ants on Peony buds. Another one of nature's marvels.

I didn't know that, Mike, but it does explain the ants' nests that have appeared behind the retaining wall on either side of my front path. I have been trying to deter them without success, won't feel so bad about it now I know there is a good reason for them being there :-)

Mikec is so right... always wondered about the whys and wherefores of that... I have heard from folks who have healthy specimens which don't bloom or only have one bloom... non blooming can be because they are planted too deeply...but I think it can also be because there are no ants.

Oh dear these ants look big yuck.
Your peony looks as if it may be red when one I have sadi it was a pinky white.

When it flowers Scotkate its pinky white as well The bud does look like its a red flower
