Ah..serenity..think Ive almost got there, Im getting more laid back the longer I look back to my retirement..
We do like to view the garden from different angles, so we have four separate seating areas, the upper terrace (great for morning coffee on hot days its in the shade then), we can see all the garden; the lower patio where we can sit among the climbing roses and look towards the arbor; under the cherry tree and watch birds on feeder and look across to lilac, and the arbour itself to see the bottom borders and the birds in the lilac. Slightly overkill for a 30 x 60ft garden, but what the heck!

overkill??? sounds like excellent use of 30 x 60!! congrats!

Oh and we can see the whole garden from top now as we removed the conifers, getting way too big! (Labelled dwarf..6ft after 10 yrs Ha!)

hmmm... 6 ft and much too tall... lol. Proportion is one aspect of composing a garden that is usually the last appreciated. The lovely little shrub can be huge in three years time...and labels like "dwarf" are no guarantee that it will fit at maturity. I had that experience with cannas. What is it that produces "dwarfism" anyway? Stands to reason that a good culture might defeat such characteristics if the dwarfism is brought about by a practice starvation and of root and shoot pruning..like bonsai. In the far north here in Canada there are abies (fir) that grow in the acidic swamps...very severe winter conditions ...low oxygen to the roots because they stand in water...yet these fir trees live to be over 200 years old...and they stand a wopping 6 or 7 ft tall!

I can just see everyone buying an abies to stand in their pond! Ha Ha! Now there's a thought...I know a fair few people who would like to limit their neighbours leylandii to 6 ft!
