My border

This photo shows a small section of my border. As you can see, the border is raised due to the soil being of poor quality. I have used log sleepers which are bolted together: the bottom ones are concreted in. Throughout the borders, I have used small logs. I like the effect during the winter, they give some random height, provide places for the birds to perch and provide some shelter for the plants. Also, they were free!

What soil do you have Gd? Could be no worse than mine,
i have Clay soil, which needs load of work, by adding lots
of grit, Sand & i also use loads of my own Compost, as i
have 3 Composters...which i fill regularly...you have good idea's re: log sleepers & providing lots of places for our
Wildlife...good on you!!!

Thank you for the kind comments! Here in Hull, the soil tends towards clay. Council house gardens are notorious for having poor soil: usually, the garden area is a dumping ground for the waste from the house building and the council spread a couple of inches of top-soil on it, fling on some grass seed and tell you to keep your garden tidy!
I bought some land next door to my house, and whilst digging out the dead roses and rotten bushes ready for my block paved area, I ended up digging out the remains of a small brick building left over from the war: the estate I live on was an airfield at one time! I ended up with an inguinal hernia for my troubles which was painful.

Thanks for adding me.
I am in a council bungalow & have solid yellow clay & I believe there were brickworks nearby years ago. As if that we not bad enough the former tenant had used the back garden as a 'dog run' for numerous animals. My hubby was marvelous & dug out 3 large skipfuls. He then made me raised beds with railways sleepers & we filled them with 30 tons of topsoil. He made a curved wall & patio area with broken slabs & paths between the beds. Thankfully he didn't get a hernia but his back suffered for quite a while. It was well worth it because we've been able to grow quite a lot of veg & fruit & it is maturing quite well. He then built me another patio area complete with pergola on which a vine is growing well. (Must remove a lot more bunches this year as I left too many on last year & the grapes were small)
jLove the look of your stickies but I don't think I'd like the tarantula! I found 2 Hawkeshead Moths on the front lawn last year but didn't think to photo them.
