This was a nice surprise today!

Really? I grew this from seed - I do usually get one or two pink ones, and last year, a beauty with pink stripes.

Well, I was mostly referring to the ones available commercially--never could figure out why they didn't pick better stock to propagate! What mix do you sow, Spritz? Or is it of your own harvest?

No - the seeds are called 'Talent Mixed'. You can also buy 'Tiger Stripes' or 'Daybreak Mixed' but the 'Talent' ones, although they're the most expensive, give a wonderful colour range.

Ah! I'll have to look for that mix, Spritz. Too late this year, though--have to try again in September.

Our new seed ranges start to appear in early spring. Why September, Tug? Is that when you plant seeds in Arizona?

Herbaceous plants--and a few shrubs--divide into summer-active and winter-active categories here in the subtropical desert, Spritz. The ones that put on more growth and stay healthier in winter--including Gazanias--we start from seed in the fall. Some of those don't germinate in cold soil, so we start them in early fall. Usually, ideal conditions for Gazanias occur in mid October, but late September is good if you're impatient!

Very different for you, then, Tug - I'd have to learn how to garden in a very different way! Fascinating. Thank you.

Really, really pink, Spritz! It's rare to find a gazania this pure a pink--they almost always look peachy or dirty.
