new ferns

I found these today while doing my Sunday grocery shopping. Even though I just bought 5 Tennessee ostrich ferns from eBay, I figured I just couldn't have too many ferns. I have a large area by the driveway that needs planting; only a small portion of it has been improved at all, and I'd like to load that up with big ferns & some fall-blooming natives. Can't wait!!

I just think they're so underutilized, but maybe that's because I have so much shade and they're always reliable. I can't wait to see how the TN ostrich (or glade) ferns look - it's a big fern with fronds 2-3 feet long. And I was glad to see that my log ferns survived the winter, since they were planted late in the fall - one even has a new frond! The only thing I dislike about ferns is that they can fail if you aren't a consistent waterer.....every year I promise myself that I'll soak my sensitive ferns daily so they get nice and big, and every year I manage to screw up. Same with the cinnamon ferns - I've seen even wild sensitive and cinnamon ferns that have clearly suffered from our summertime droughts.

What are your log ferns are they what we call tree ferns(Dicksonia Antarctica) i am struggling to keep them alive with last two hard winters.

Log ferns are Dryopteris celsa, a naturally occurring hybrid between D. ludoviciana (southern wood fern) and D. goldiana (Goldie's wood fern). It's a big fern & evergreen. I wanted some of the true ostrich ferns but they don't do well with heat and humidity. I really want a tree fern & I found some on eBay, I'm just worried about hardiness.

They are not proving hardy here in prolonged cold at about -5c even wrapped up

it looks like that species would not be hardy here - it's only hardy to zone 8 & I'm zone 7. If I could bring it in in the winter it would be ok, but I read that it doesn't do well in a pot. The ones I saw on Ebay were Hawaiian tree ferns.
