Bullfinch...I think!

Bullfinch...I think!

At first I thought Chaffinch, but looking again, I think Bullfinch, which is nice because if I hadn't taken this close-up using my zoom, I'd never have known!

Thans Yorks. It's a bit grainy on account of my having to use full zoom and then crop it right down! Still, you can see the bird.

Well shot Karen -not easy !
My mum is staying for a few days, and spends most of the time watching the birds from the conservatory. This morning she was enjoying the antics of a group of starlings on the table ,when down swooped a sparrowhawk and grabbed one of them, she was quite upset....I don't like it... but they have to eat ! Was ages before the other birds had the courage to come back .

Definitely a Bullfinch Karen, my you are getting good. They like the buds on the fruit trees, so you may loose a few bits of blossom from them.

Certainly is. Still haven't seen any in my garden.

Dont think its a bullfinch Karen, their cheeks are definitely pinky red and they have a noticeable white rump..could be a Stonechat? The beak looks pointy too, finches tend to have quite heavy stubby beaks, especially the bullfinch..I could be wrong, but have posted a pic of some that were in my garden..

Think it could be a Brambling Karen.. apparently Chaffinches and Bramblings are so closely related they have been known to interbreed. I agree with Tetrarch the beak looks too fine for a Bullfinch...

It does look a pointy beak doesn't it...but a stonechat should have white at it's collar and this one doesn't seem to have that. It is also a bit pale for a bullfinch isn't it...not a really pink breast, whereas the stonechat has paler breast. Brambling's beak is the wrong shape altogether judy....I think ;)

Yeah, you're probably right Karen :)
