raised bed with Brussels sprouts

raised bed with Brussels sprouts

I planted these Brussels sprouts last fall, but procrastinated and got them in the ground too late. I figured they'd die over the winter, but all survived and even 2 of the cauliflowers survived. Some have fallen over & need to be propped up, but they have all grown by leaps and bounds in the past few weeks.

That looks good Lauram. Are you going to plant more veg or flowers inside the spaces of the bricks?

I'll probably plant herbs or flowers, maybe some strawberries. I might as well use the space.

That'll look good and also hide the bricks. You know what? Why not plant all three if you can't decide!

I thought about planting some trailing annuals like Bacopa or Lobelia. I hate the look of the cinderblocks but I had plenty of them & not plenty of money, so I used them instead of buying wood. I'm not sure if there's quite enough space in each opening for most vegetables, but I'm going to try. If it doesn't work I can just move them elsewhere.

I agree with you on that, using whatever materials you have, makes sense why spend money on wood when you have those bricks? They do the job just as well. What about Leeks, spring onions, and carrots and others you can always lift the blocks off to dig them up.

stop encouraging me to spend more money LOL! No, just kidding, growing your own is so cost effective, especially as prices are rising day by day here because our gas prices are skyrocketing. Now, leeks, that's a GREAT idea!!! I did not think of leeks! I love them in soups. I wonder what else would work in a small space.

these look good n healthy L.
Last year I lost all my brassicas to the cabbage white caterpillars despite netting them but the butterflies simply folded their wings & shot straight through the mesh. If I had'nt seen it for myself I would'nt have believed it!!
Anyway, this year I'm making a hoop frame from plastic tubing & getting a finer net. Love fresh picked greens, good job they leave the spinach alone.
Quick growing Salad crops like spring onion, lettuce, radish & baby carrots will grow really well in the blocks. Dont forget basil especially if you pop a couple of tomato plants in also. Marigolds would look good in amongst the plants & is also a companion plant which helps to deter certain pests.
I'm an avid re-cycler & those blocks look terrific btw!!

Love the way you done the bed

Bampy, the blocks are cheap, and I love cheap. These were blocks that were just sitting around; I took them from the turtle pens since it was fall and the turtles were inside. I had them in the pens so the tortoises wouldn't dig. I did buy more blocks for the strawberry bed last week, and I think they were $1.15 per block, not bad! I have a wooden turtle pen inside that I'm not using, so I'll probably repurpose that into a raised bed as well.

Just put a few of the plants I mentioned into your raised bed Lauram, look in my photo's & you'll see an idealised picture just for fun.

like the way you used the blocks for raised beds, i would grow some plants in the spaces that would put of pests from your sprouts some gardeners do this to protect their crop. Nasturtiums are a popular with vegetable gardeners to keep pests off like black fly (aphids) and cabbage white butterflies.
