Last July we spent a week on the Trent and mersey canal with my parents

Yes, the canals are used mainly for leisure purposes now. You do get leisure craft on the canals but they tend to use the rivers more. My parents retired 3 years ago and sold their house, business and car to purchase there narrow boat. It is a beautiful way to spend your days whatever the weather. Their boat is very cosy, it's 57 foot long and about 7 foot wide, with all mod cons. They both enjoy the wildlife and scenery, although mum misses her garden.

What a great way of life...although I understand how your Mom would miss her garden... maybe you could make her a terrarium for birthday, or anniversary etc. a small terrarium wouldn't take up much room. Thanks for answering my questions.

What a great life floating past others gardens enjoying the beauty while someone else does the hardwork - how retirement should be , idyllic.

a pair of swans with two cygnets...they are such graceful birds. Reminds me of the story of the ugly duckling. They really aren't that attractive when they are young, are they? What is the fate of the canals? Are they used for leisure pursuits only now? Would be an interesting trip to paddle your way around Britain by canal..I see a barge in the layby..are leisure craft allowed on the canals?
