Peacock Butterfly

I love butterflies and apparently they are becoming quite scarce in some areas, we are trying to encourage them into our garden more. I suppose we are luckier than most because we have lots of trees around us and fields so we see quite a lot of different ones. Think my favourite is the painted lady, but I do like the brimstone, maybe that is because it is one of the very early ones and you know spring is here when they show up.

This one was sunbathing on the path ahead of us ... almost trod on the poor thing! Google 'The Big Butterfly Count' for information on the top ten of Butterflies. It makes interesting reading! : o )

Do they only do the count in July? If they do they surely miss all the early butterflies like the brimstone! It is one of the first to appear in our garden. We did have a couple of comma butterflies very early this year though. Today I saw a small blue think it was the Holly blue butterfly. It would not sit still for me to get a close look at it and they all move a lot quicker than I do these days. lol.

I agree with you, it does seem ridiculous to only count once, in July-August usually. I saw a Brimstone last week, too fast to take a pic though! We have the blue ones down here, think they like the South Downs and fly a little further South to our garden. : o ))

The only butterflies we get here are peacocks, red admirals and cabbage whites.....but I love em!

Oh yes, surprisingly many for the spring. I don't normall see them until July, but there have already been a few and one overnight stay in the greenhouse! Must be all the flowers in my garden! btw, the blue tits are back at the nesting box checking it out! I haven't checked yet today, but I am very hopeful!!

Oh, that's good news, let's hope they find it to be a des. res. for them! : o )
